The Spring term usually sees me lecturing on Planning Law and Practice at the Henley Business School, University of Reading, with lecture theatres like this one full of students. Empty universities and learning from home due to Covid means that this term's tuition is all online, but the town planners and real estate professionals of tomorrow are still being trained.

An unexpected side effect of the Covid restrictions and lockdown has been a big increase in planning applications. More people seem to be looking to extend their properties or build on land. And, understandably, others are wanting to protect their own property from insensitive development. Our book shows how to get involved in the planning process if you need to object to a planning application or appeal. For more information and to find out how to buy the book go to our website.
We were pleased to receive listed building consent and planning permission for a basement and ground floor extension to the rear of a listed building in Belgravia, London, as well as internal works to the building. The application had been refused on the grounds of perceived harm to the listed building, the basement works and an objection to the modern design, as well as harm to a tree. We demonstrated in the appeal submissions that the design and the changes to the original building were suitable, that the application complied with the Council's basement policies, and the tree would not be harmed.
Client: St James' Street Property Management It was World Town Planning Day on 8th November, and to mark the occasion BBC 6 Music had a special playlist! Listen again via the BBC Sounds page, to hear songs on a planning theme.
We wrote a short piece for the monthly newsletter of the Belgravia Society, following research into a site that formerly housed a 'sun ray therapy' building from the inter-War period. This was a popular health movement at the time which saw thousands bathing in artificial sunlight, until post-War the problems of over exposure became evident.
We were delighted to secure planning permission for this striking contemporary house on a riverside site of the Thames. The new house, built for our client as their dream home, will replace an existing dilapidated house on a prime river frontage. The project raised issues of flooding, drainage, ecology, trees and sustainability as well as the design. The application was approved by the Council, with the Planning Committee unanimous in their admiration of the design and securing a permission for a prominent site.
Client: private householder A quirk in planning policy means that erecting outbuildings to dwellings in the Green Belt can often be difficult. This case was made even more difficult by a planning condition attached to a new housing development that specifically removed permitted development rights. The Council had refused permission for our client's new home office building at the end of their garden. We put the case in what was a surprisingly complex appeal, given the small scale, and the appeal was allowed with the Inspector accepting our interpretation of Green Belt policy rather than the Council's case.
Client: private householder We have been working with recent start-up company Karma Kitchen in securing planning permission for their new programme of opening kitchens in commercial buildings. They are expanding into new ventures and regenerating redundant buildings to provide easy to use commercial kitchen areas by the hour or day for the hospitality sector.
Client: Karma Kitchen Planning permission has been granted for a large extension to a house following a complex series of prior approval submissions and alternative planning applications. The client a specific requirement for an extension to the house - and concerned neighbours - that necessitated a series of different applications being made, rather than one single application. We achieved their goal after advising on the best strategy to follow, with a planning application approved under delegated powers.
Client: private householder We have been involved for a number of years in the preparation of the new South Oxfordshire District Local Plan, making representations on behalf of a number of clients opposing development. The Plan has proved to be highly controversial in relation to housing allocations, and we have advised our clients in detail behind the scenes and made appearances at meetings over the years. We recently appeared at the virtual sessions for the Examination of the Local Plan, which is the first full virtual Hearing in the country.
