Planning permission was granted at appeal for an awning to a cafe directly adjoining the Grade II* listed Whitechapel Art Gallery. The Council had objected to the effect on the setting of the listed building and the conservation area. We demonstrated with detailed historic research that the character of the street has traditionally seen awnings to properties since Victorian times, and we proved to the Inspector that the new awning would be an appropriate addition to the cafe.
